How to make a tier list

Learn how to make a tier list with text or images, edit five tiers, choose a ranking criterion, and save the result in Tier Studio.

Define the ranking first

Give the board a title that explains what you are comparing. “My favorite game soundtracks” is clearer than an unexplained power ranking. Decide what each tier means before you place items. S through D are editable labels, so you can use Favorites, Try next or any short categories that fit your purpose.

The Custom board starts with six game-name tiles, all unranked. To start from scratch, select each starter tile and use Remove tile, then add your own items. The editor always has five tier rows; you can rename and recolor them but cannot add more rows.

Add and place tiles

  • Enter a name in Add a tile and choose Add. New tiles appear in Unranked.
  • Select a tile in Unranked; then choose Place here on a tier.
  • On desktop you can drag a tile onto a row or back to Unranked.
  • Use Move left or Move right to change its position within the row.
  • Use Return to unranked when you want to reconsider, or Remove tile to delete it.

The board supports at most 80 tiles, including its starter names and your additions. Selection is shown by an outline. Press Escape while an editor button has focus to clear selection without moving a tile.

Edit tiers and colors

Edit the row label directly and choose its color with the color input. Tier labels allow up to 24 characters, tile names up to 60, and the board title up to 100. Short labels are easier to scan. PNG export wraps the title and labels to keep their text visible.

Save the result you need

Move at least one tile into a tier to enable Export PNG. Only ranked items appear in that picture. Export backup downloads a JSON file you can restore later, including unranked tiles and image thumbnails. Copy template link shares the starter page URL; it does not include your custom ranking.
